Kybella uses a series of deoxycholic acid injections to dissolve submental fat cells over time. The treatment requires numerous injections—as many as 20 to 50—containing a cocktail of acid injected into targeted areas. The number of injection treatments varies by patient. Such procedures are normally spaced 4-6 weeks apart, and post-procedure swelling may linger for weeks, with visible results taking months. Some patients also report bruising, tightness, and temporary numbness. The pain has been compared to dozens of fire ants stinging your neck. Deoxycholic acid has only been approved by the FDA for submental fat under the neck and chin. It’s often still used unsanctioned for other areas of the body, and patients may want to be wary of such propositions by physicians.
