Subcutaneous fat deposits can enlarge the lower neck and back area between the shoulders, causing the formation of a fat pocket commonly called a buffalo hump. Also called a dorsocervical fat pad, this accumulation of fat not only affects one’s appearance but can also impair mobility and limit the neck’s range of motion; in extreme cases, patients may even experience difficulty walking.

Although they tend to develop due to reasons outside of our control, like genetics or medical conditions, having a buffalo hump can be embarrassing and potentially lead to back issues. Unfortunately, liposuction-based procedures that seem like viable buffalo hump treatments use manual methods that require large incisions to access subcutaneous fat.
