Exploring the Different Types of Injection Lipolysis Treatments
Injection lipolysis is a minimally invasive medical procedure designed to target and reduce fat. This process is commonly called fat dissolving injections and has become more prevalent within cosmetic medicine.
Injection Lipolysis Debrief
Injection lipolysis refers to injecting different substances directly into the fat layer under the skin, known as the hypodermis. The injections can destroy fat cells, causing them to no longer store or accumulate fat.
The destroyed fat cells are metabolized and eliminated through natural body processes.
In North America, the only FDA-approved fat dissolving injection is Kybella, a deoxycholic acid commonly marketed to treat submental fat, also known as the double chin.
What is Deoxycholic Acid?
Deoxycholic acid is a component found in human bile, a fluid secreted from the liver and stored in the body to digest lipids (fats) in the small intestine. This acid has the function of disrupting the fat cell membrane, causing the cell to die and then be naturally removed by the body.
It's important to understand that while deoxycholic acid can target fat cells, that doesn't mean you won't gain the fat back if you don't maintain your weight.
That's because all human bodies have a finite number of fat cells, meaning that when someone gains weight, it's not because new fat cells are generated but because the fat cells expand. Fat cells shrink in the case of losing weight.
Therefore, Kybella will remove fat cells, helping you become thinner on the treatment site, but the moment you gain weight, those cells will expand, returning you to where you started.
Other acids such as phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate (DC), and phosphatidylcholine (PC) are used in treatments. Yet they haven't been thoroughly tested as Kybella's deoxycholic acid, thus leaving their safety under question by some.
