How Long Will Hand Rejuvenation Results Last Compared With Fillers?

The results of fat grafting are permanent, but not all fat is retained. It is essential that the plastic surgeon performing your procedure understands this surgery well and knows how to ensure that the fat is kept. Fat storage is critical in fat grafting, so it is essential to have a professional who understands the procedure well.
The success rate of a fat transfer to the hands is usually 50-70% of fat retained over the long term, similar to any other fat graft. This number can even increase with weight gain, which is not recommended. Skilled surgeons, like those at Elite Body Sculpture, always know the right amount of extra material to transfer to account for the natural reabsorption that occurs.
What Affects Results Longevity After a Fat Transfer to the Hands?
The longevity of the results is affected by several factors:
- Your surgeon's knowledge. How the fat was harvested and purified and how and where it was injected into the hands will affect your results' longevity. The more skilled the surgeon and the better she masters the technique, the longer the results will last.
- The technique used. Adding the least amount of foreign material and antibiotics tends to be the best way to ensure that the maximum percentage of fat transplanted is accepted.
- How well your body adapts to the transferred fat. The injected fat must establish a new blood supply in your body and receive the nutrients it needs to survive. Once this is done, the results can and often are permanent; however, a certain percentage of fat may not be accepted, occasionally requiring additional revision procedures. Lifestyle factors such as smoking can affect this.
- In general, fat is best stored in areas with abundant blood supply. The hands tend to lose volume over time as a natural consequence of age, and although fat transfers last a long time, patients may see a slight diminishing of results after ten years.
How Long Do Results Last Following a Hand Rejuvenation Fat Transfer?
Fat grafting is permanent and lasts for years after the fat is absorbed into the tissues of the back of the hands. This is different from a filler treatment, which must be repeated every 12-18 months.
It should be noted that volume can be lost after several years or even decades due to natural aging. The transferred fat does not disappear, but the hands eventually lose volume on their own because of life, wear and tear – that said, patients at least have a better, fuller set of hands they are starting with.
AirSculpt fat transfer procedures require minimal downtime, only local anesthesia, and produce no visible scarring thanks to our fine, delicate tools.
What Are the Side Effects of a Fat Transfer?
There are a few side effects to watch out for with fat grafting; although the procedure is generally safe, there are always a few significant risks. These side effects of fat grafting include:
- Minor bruising and swelling
- Small scars that usually disappear with time
- Temporary numbness
- Partial loss of fat at the injection site
