Philadelphia AirSculpt® vs. Traditional Liposuction

Laser Vs. Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction: What Are The Differences?

Fitness model belly love, digestion and skincare, laser liposuction and abdomen

Liposuction has long been a popular fat removal operation, continuously ranking among the most common aesthetic procedures in the United States.

It enables surgeons to eliminate unnecessary fat and swiftly create a better contour. Traditional liposuction includes making tiny incisions through which fluid is injected to induce an anesthetic that reduces pain and bleeding. This step is followed by suctioning fat from exact places with a cannula, a hollow metal tube. This is the tried-and-true method of liposuction that is both effective and easy to grasp.

The Varying Forms of Liposuction

So the issue remains: why has liposuction become so popular with so many options, and which is the best? The short answer is that no research has proved that many of the "latest and greatest" liposuction forms, like laser and ultrasound-assisted fat removal, are superior to regular liposuction. Some pose risks and difficulties that standard liposuction does not, while some provide unique benefits. The confusion stems from the latest trends and the public's enthusiasm for anything involving sophisticated technology.

Let's look into two of the most popularly marketed forms of liposuction: ultrasound and laser-assisted liposuction, to determine how they actually differ.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction

SmartLipo, SlimLipo, LipoLite, and other laser-assisted liposuction procedures are commonly available. This treatment follows most of the same stages as regular liposuction. Still, before suctioning out fat, a specialized cannula is placed that delivers laser energy to break up the fat before suctioning. Although this reduces the surgeon's labor requirements for fat removal, laser radiation generates heat, which increases the risk of skin burns and other problems.

The goal of the heat energy is to provide the added benefit of skin tightening. However, this is limited and transitory at most, and no studies have proven laser liposuction's superior to standard liposuction. The treatment takes longer, and the special cannulas usually necessitate larger incisions. Considering this, the danger of skin burns, and the absence of a clear advantage, few compelling reasons exist to recommend this procedure over standard liposuction.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction

This approach predates laser liposuction and involves treatments such as VASER liposuction. As you might expect, the same stages are involved, but the laser energy given can be replaced with ultrasonic energy. Again, it reduces labor requirements while maintaining the same risk and benefit profile as laser liposuction. It has also not been proven superior or provides more significant skin shrinkage than standard liposuction.

The Optimal Choice is AirScupt® Fat Removal Technology

Given the several risks associated with laser and ultra-sound assisted liposuction, it would be wise to search for an alternative that prevents itself from creating potentially harmful results.

AirSculpt® fat removal has always gone to lengths to ensure that patients achieve beautiful, aesthetic results while having a comfortable experience before, during, and after the procedure.

AirSculpt® can guarantee such results, given that it's a minimally invasive process that does not use scalpels, stitches, needles, or general anesthesia.

Instead of using a scalpel, a biopsy punch forms a perfectly symmetrical two-millimeter opening from which fat can be extracted, thus creating a tiny entryway that doesn't even require stitches to be closed. All that's left is a mark the size of a freckle, so there is no scarring to worry about either.

Regarding downtime, the AirSculpt® average is about 48 hours, an ideal benefit for those with busy schedules. Rather than melting or damaging fat with ultrasound energy, this delicate technique plucks individual fat cells with a mechanical motion that provides superior finesse to any liposuction procedure. A significant benefit of this approach is that fat cells experience minimal damage during the removal process, reducing swelling in treated areas while improving the viability of fat for a transfer if desired. With laser or ultrasonic liposuction, fat cells are often damaged in a manner than prevents a graft from being possible.
