Poor Posture and Buffalo Humps: What You Should Know

A buffalo hump is detrimental to your posture because it forces your head forward and rounds your upper back.
It's also much more common for women than men to have a buffalo hump, usually showing up around age 30, and it tends to get larger with age.
Buffalo humps can be associated with hormonal imbalances, specifically high levels of cortisol (stress hormone) and even fluctuations with estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.
It's also associated with Cushing's Disease, an issue with the pituitary gland, where one of its side effects is a pronounced growth on the upper back and between the shoulders.
That being said, as your posture gets more slouched and stooped, the buffalo will appear larger.
Posture Makes Your Buffalo Hump Look Worse
Bad posture can make your buffalo hump appear more accentuated and can even lead to cervical spine issues.
Improving posture can help because it saves your back from degenerative joint disease, which will provide you with improved head and neck movement, and less strain on your upper back.
Sometimes your poor posture can be confused with the forward head carriage. That's when the head is positioned in front of your body instead of on top, causing the bones in the neck to flex forward.
If you ignore the proper alignment in your beck, it can severely limit your range of motion. So if the only way your neck feels normal is when you're looking down, you must do what you can to get that fixed.
Fixing A Buffalo Hump
If a misaligned spine is what causes your buffalo hump, you can wear a posture-fixing device to progressively treat that condition. If your spinal curvature is severe, consider more direct medical attention.
Many cosmetic procedures can be used as treatment if your buffalo hump is caused by excess fat on the upper back and between the shoulders.
If you're considering this route to fix a buffalo hump, you should look into working with Elite Body Sculpture in Houston or any of our other various locations.
