The Pandemic Plastic Surgery Boom: Is It Here to Stay?
At the start of the pandemic, the plastic surgeon field suffered. Most hospitals and surgical centers banned elective procedures and limited plastic surgeries to reconstructive and functional.
In certain cities, practices have to close entirely to all but essential patients or adapt by focusing on in-office procedures.
In the face of COVID-19, various patients canceled surgeries, concerned with the new risks of the virus, while others were financially troubled, no longer able to afford their procedures.
Yet, this didn't last long. After a few months, restrictions on surgeries were lifted, practices reopened their doors, and more people became interested in these procedures.
The "Zoom Boom"
It's interesting to understand why anyone would care about undergoing an elective surgery during the middle of the pandemic. Someone being stuck at home but wanting to change their appearance might not make much sense to some.
Social media at the time was full of memes highlighting the new normal of the workforce: working from the couch or wearing pajama pants with a tailored blazer.
Once you dive into a little bit of research, it becomes a lot clearer. One of the main hindrances for people undergoing surgery is recovery time. Having to schedule days off for some people was a nightmare and even an impossibility. Others didn't want it to be known that they had undergone a procedure.
Yet, being able to work from home made a recovery much easier. While it's necessary that they still take time off from work, they could quickly get back to their duties by working from the comfort of their own bed. Also, not having to wear work clothes makes the recovery experiences that much more comfortable.
Additionally, not having to commute, buy lunches, and spend more money on their wardrobe allowed several citizens to save.
But most importantly, the "Zoom Boom' led several people to take a look at themselves more often. While back at the office, you would only see yourself in the bathroom mirror; it now became inevitable to see yourself for hours on end during a Zoom call.
What Procedures Saw A Benefit In The New Era?
2021 came with various interesting changes in plastic surgery trends. For several years, breast augmentations were the most popular, alongside liposuction, rhinoplasty, and facelifts.
Yet, interest in facial procedures became a lot more apparent due to Zoom conference calls. Therefore, requests for chin liposuction and facelifts began to skyrocket.
Is The Plastic Surgery Covid Boom Here To Stay?
The Zoom Boom is likely here to stay. While companies benefit from a home-based workforce, its effects on Millenials and how they want to revamp their appearances should persist.
It may lose its traction of popularity by a small percentage, but it's definitely not going anywhere anytime soon.
