Avéli and Cellulite: Everything You Should Know About This Innovative Treatment

What is Avéli?

Avéli is a minimally invasive, FDA-cleared, one-time treatment for cellulite on the buttocks and thighs. During the procedure, a doctor inserts a handheld device under the skin that mechanically cuts the septae, or bands of connective tissue, that stretch the skin's surface and cause dimples to form. 

The end of the device contains a light and a hook. The light allows the doctor to easily navigate beneath the skin, determine the device's depth, and track the hook as it is guided toward cellulite dimples. The goal is to remain closer to the skin's surface, and the light changes from dimmer to brighter depending on the current depth. 

Once the septum is hooked, a blade is unlocked with the push of a button to cut the fibrous band. The doctor should be able to feel and see the release happen in real-time, with a noticeable retreat by the dimple evident right away. Then the blade is withdrawn, and the hook is passed under the tissue to confirm that the septum has been completely severed. 

If any bands remain, the hook will quickly run into them, signaling more cellulite-causing septae need to be removed. The blade is still sharp enough to treat both buttocks and thighs in one treatment.
