Does Insurance Cover Liposuction For Lipedema, and Which Treatment is Best?

Does Insurance Cover Liposuction For Lipedema, and Which Treatment is Best?

It must be made clear that liposuction cannot cure lipedema. It's a process that can provide fat reduction, symptom relief and slow the progression of the disease.

Liposuction in itself is not an appropriate solution for everyone with lipedema, and as with any surgical process, there are risks that one should be aware of.

While it's safe for healthy individuals, risks such as infection, bleeding, and trauma can occur. It's also best that patients be realistic with the recovery process related to lipedema liposuction.

Swelling is much more prolonged in individuals with lipedema. Additionally, traditional liposuction will not show the full and final results of the procedures until the swelling becomes nonexistent. Therefore, the full benefit of the procedure may not be realized until six months to a year.

Nevertheless, most patients with lipedema experience a noticeable improvement to all or many of their symptoms with varying results with traditional liposuction.

Does Insurance Cover Liposuction For Lipedema?

Lipedema is an inherited connective tissue and fat storage disease. Nevertheless, not all medical insurance companies fail to cover the cost of liposuction for lipedema. The few companies that can only cover a partial charge. Regardless, the insurance field is becoming more conscious about lipedema, and coverage has shown significant improvements.

Medical insurance tends only to cover diseases that impact a woman's mobility and quality of life. Lipedema's impact depends on the severity and progression of the condition. Some women only undergo a few symptoms from lipedema, while others are affected by their walk, pain, swelling, and fatigue, causing secondary complications that impact their overall lifestyle.

Medical insurance would like to avoid covering lipedema or only conditions that cause symptoms that impact a person's daily life financially. Nevertheless, several health insurance companies are becoming more inclusive about lipedema within their policies, primarily when documentation supports the fact that the patient needs surgery.
