Buccal Fat Removal: What is It, and Does AirSculpt® Provide One?

The cheek fat pad is the rounded area of fat in the center of the cheek. It is located between the facial muscles in the hollow below the cheekbone. The size of the cheek fat pad can affect the shape of your face.

Everyone has fat pads on their cheeks. However, the size of the fat pads on the cheeks can vary greatly. If you have larger fat pads on your cheeks, you may feel that your face looks too round or too full.

There is nothing wrong with more prominent cheeks. But if you want to make them smaller, a plastic surgeon may recommend a buccal fat removal procedure. This operation is done to reduce the width of round faces.

What is Cheek Fat Removal?

Cheek or buccal fat removal is a form of plastic surgery. It is also known as buccal lipectomy or cheek reduction.

The procedure surgically removes the buccal fat pad in the cheeks. This makes the cheeks thinner and defines the facial angles.

The surgery can be performed alone or in combination with another form of plastic surgery, such as a

1. facelift

2. rhinoplasty

3. chin implants

4. lip augmentation

5. Botox injections

A Traditional Buccal Fat Removal

The procedure can be performed in the hospital or as an outpatient procedure. Here's what it usually involves:

1. If only fat is being removed from your face, a local anesthetic is applied to your face. You will feel minimal pain but be conscious during the procedure.

2. You may be given a general anesthetic if you need more than one procedure. In this case, you will need a ride to and from the surgeon's office.

3. The surgeon makes an incision in your cheek. They push the outside of your cheek to further expose the buccal fat pad.

4. The surgeon will make the incision and remove the fat.

5. They will close the wound with dissolvable sutures.
