Hip Flip™ vs BBL: Which Can Fix Hip Dips?

hip flip before and after one week

Many women nowadays want to have round and full buttocks like those flaunted on social media.

Yet, nature hasn't blessed us all with the natural hourglass figure. The tiny waist and rounder, fuller buttocks that look like an hourglass are usually a product of one's genetics.

On the other hand, hip dips can prevent women from obtaining an hourglass silhouette in the gym despite being similarly genetic. While they can be frustrating, there are new solutions in the cosmetic and plastic surgery realm that can help you get those desired curves, including fat injections in the hips.

A Background on Hip Dips

The term hip dips has only recently surged to become part of people's everyday vocabulary, so you may not be entirely aware of it.

They refer to the indentation between the top of the buttocks and the thigh, which forms a shape similar to that of a violin. These are sometimes casually referred to as violin hips, but their anatomical term is trochanteric depressions.

Several sites out there promise to fix hip dips via exercises and non-invasive techniques, but the truth is that they won't likely work unless the dip is caused by excess fat. Although you may see a slight improvement, neither option will offer a solution to hip dips if your genetic bone structure is the cause.

Hip dips are often formed by how your bone structure is designed from birth. Therefore, believing that some gym workouts will alter your bone structure isn't your best bet.

Excess fat on either the love handles or saddlebags can also contribute to the appearance of hip dips. In these cases, a healthier diet and some mild cardio sessions can slightly alter the appearance. Yet, the fact is that despite losing weight from that area of the hips, the indentations can and will likely persist.

Fixing Hip Dips with a Fat Transfer

Cosmetic surgery, such as a fat transfer procedure, can fill out these indentations with ease.

The process involves combining two procedures. The first is liposuction, where the surgeon harvests body fat from an area with excess. Then, the surgeon uses fat grafting, where the harvested fat cells are transferred to fill out the indentations.

What you end up with is a smoother silhouette and an hourglass figure.

This entire process can also be completed via a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) for hip dips or with a fat transfer to the hips, depending on the patient's goals.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift, and Can It Fix Hip Dips?

BBL surgery is a treatment in which your surgeon removes excess fat from a trouble spot, such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. Then, they treat the fact and inject it into the buttocks to sculpt a rounded shape and add volume.

Will a BBL fix hip dips? While the procedure focuses more on contouring your buttocks, the fact that fat is used to fill out the hips means you can also treat your hip dips.

If you want to achieve fuller buttocks with a smooth-edged silhouette, a Brazilian butt lift can give you those benefits.

As AirSculpt® inventor Dr. Rollins describes in the video above, skilled BBL surgeons can customize results according to each patient's desires. For example, some patients might desire modest projection to the buttocks while dramatically augmenting the hips to fill in hip dips.

BBL vs. Hip Flip™: Each Can Fix Hip Dips

Both the BBL and a Hip Flip™ can add volume to the hips. If you want to achieve the hourglass figure, characterized by a narrow waist and rounded, curvy hips, either fat transfer option can do the job.

That said, the BBL is the better option for those who want to transfer large amounts of fat to the buttocks to achieve more projection, as Austin plastic surgeon Dr. Anire Okpaku details above.

Because the hips are also treated during a Brazilian Butt Lift, this treatment can fix hip dips. Patients who are not looking to add volume to the buttocks and only want to add curvy fullness to the hips make better candidates for the Hip Flip™.

A Word on How Fat Grafting Works

Fat grafting is a great option to fill your buttocks and hip dips. Nonetheless, it must be noted that surgeons only expect roughly 70 percent of the grafted fat to survive in the area where it was transferred due to the body reabsorbing the rest naturally.

Most surgeons account for this by overfilling the area, so the patients still obtain their desired results after the recovery.

But, it is a reality that you must be aware of. And even with overfilling, if you don't care for your body during recovery, your buttocks and hips may not end up with the results you expect.

Recovering From A BBL

If you want to fix your hip dips, a liposuction-based Brazilian butt lift can get the job done, but it is not your only option.

A traditional liposuction-based Brazilian butt lift lasts several hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

Your surgeon will give you guidelines for your BBL recovery process, and you should follow them to every detail. The failure to recover correctly can alter your results, and that's something that we know none of you would like.

Therefore, rest as much as needed, and don't push into exercise right away. Before doing anything on a whim, consult with your surgeon to see what's best for you according to the recovery timeframe that you're in.

The Best Way to Fix Hip Dips

Unlike more invasive traditional BBLs, the AirSculpt® Power BBL™ is a minimally invasive procedure that doesn't use a scalpel, needle, stitches, or general anesthesia to sculpt your buttocks and fill out your hip dips.

It follows a similar process to traditional BBL procedures, but it's much safer and more comfortable, given that it doesn't use invasive surgical elements. From the significantly smaller entryways to our power-controlled fat removal devices to the fact that downtime only lasts two days, everything with AirSculpt® fat transfers prioritizes the patient experience.

Furthermore, our technology's enhanced versatility allows patients to customize their results. If rounded, large buttocks are desired, a Power BBL™ is likely the better option, but if patients want to fill in their hip dips alone, our Hip Flip™ treatment was designed to do so seamlessly. If a patient wants both goals accomplished during a Power BBL™, we can do that as well!

As you can see in the before and after photos included, our featured La Jolla patient naturally filled in her hip dips despite being relatively thin! This versatility is one of the most significant advantages of a hip dip fat transfer versus a full BBL.
