Can Fat Return After Kybella or Chin Liposuction?

woman's chin before and after lipo

If you've ever tried to lose weight, you're probably familiar with the idea that some fat deposits are easier to lose than others.

The chin is an area where many people find it challenging to get rid of excess fat. It used to be almost impossible to lose the extra fat on the chin (also known as a double chin), which is called submental fullness. In 2015, a new product called Kybella debuted on the cosmetic injectables market.

On April 29, 2015, the FDA approved the use of Kybella specifically for the chin area. Soon after, the product was introduced to plastic surgery clinics worldwide and received rave reviews. But just three years later, many of Kybella's early users began to complain about the injectable.

Much of the frustration with Kybella is because many people don't realize it's not a one-time procedure.

Kybella is one of those procedures where it can take several injections before you're delighted with the results. Rarely is one injection enough.

What to Know About Kybella

The problem with multiple injections is that they're costly, more than many patients expect to pay - and require various recoveries.

Many patients are confused about Kybella. There's a lot of misinformation. When you hear that an injection is designed to melt fat, it's normal to assume it works immediately, but that's not how Kybella works. It takes time, swelling, and waiting, and you may have to go through several treatments before getting the results you want.

In addition, while the results are permanent, you may accumulate more fat deposits in the area where it was treated if you gain weight after treatment. If patients don't know this in advance, it can be a big surprise - and a big disappointment.

Can fat return after Kybella? It's important to understand that Kybella destroys fat cells, so the fat doesn't return to the treated area but can return to a new location. If you usually gain fat on your chin after using Kybella, it can return to your neck, which can feel unnatural. This can happen with liposuction as well.

What Should You Do?

So what should a patient do? It's recommended that if you are considering using Kybella, you see a plastic surgeon for a consultation so you know what to expect. The surgeon can tell you how many procedures you may need and what to expect in duration and cost. They can also tell you if you are better suited for another procedure, such as liposuction.

Kybella can be an excellent option for some people, but it's not the only option. A board-certified surgeon can help you determine which procedure best suits your needs.
